The Vast and Brutal Sea by Zoraida Cordova Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ with Review and Q & A by Fallon

Vast and Brutal Sea Blog Tour Q & A with Zoraida Cordova and review By Fallon

1) At what age did you start writing?

I was 13. I know a lot of people say they started making stories since they were in the womb, but for me I didn’t know I wanted to be an author until I was 13. Before that, I wanted to be an artist. When I read IN THE FORESTS OF THE NIGHT by Amelia Atwater Rhodes, an author who got published when she was just 14!, I realized I could do it, too. Something clicked in my head and from that moment on I put all my energy into writing. I wrote 3 books which never saw the light of day. Then when I was 20 or 21 I started brainstorming The Vicous Deep. We sold the book when I was 23.

2) Did you draw inspiration from anyone you know when writing about Tristan?

Tritan is just Tristan. I’d like to say he’s a little bit like me in the sense that he loves his friends and family, but when I started writing him I started from scratch. I didn’t want an alpha hero who was tormented and wanted to save the day. I wanted a guy who was happy being a player and chilling with his boys. I wanted him to get thrust into the world of the Sea Court and feel just as lost and vulnerable as anyone else. Then, I wanted him to work for his ending.

3) How did you nail the humor and attitude of a teenage boy so effortlessly?

First of all, thank you for that. I guess I wasn’t really trying too hard. I grew up with lots of guy friends, and for a long time I was the girl who was “one of the guys.” I love my bros. They truly are cool bros. They inspired Angelo and Bertie and the rest of Tristan’s swim team.

4) What drew you to wanting to write the mythology on Triton and other Legends?

I decided to use the Greek legends because that’s what I grew up on. I loved the idea that these gods were around thousands and thousands of years ago, and somehow, possibly, these merpeople come from them. It’s fascinating to me.

5) How much research did you have to do for your Vicious Deep Trilogy?

My research consisted of looking at mermaid art for inspiration and some trips to the beach just to get a “feel.” I really wanted the island the mermaids travel on, Toliss, to be mine. I wanted the Glass Castle to be mine. I had a friend tell me, “write the mermaid story you want to read.” And that’s what I did.

6) One of my favorite quote's from Vicious Deep is PG 317 in reference to the vampires they meet in the book "Aren't you guys suppose to sparkle or something?" response back " I. Don't. Sparkle." What is your favorite quote from your trilogy?

I don’t know about the WHOLE trilogy, but my favorite lines from The Vast & Brutal Sea are PG 139 “By now I should be used to people trying to kill me. But somehow, it always comes as a bit of a shock.” ~Tristan Hart.

7) You write about a variety of creatures. Have you always been drawn to writing fantasy genre?

Most definitely. I love magic. I want to believe in magic. I think that there’s so much possibility out there and I want to keep exploring that.

8) Will there be anymore books or short stories after The Vast and Brutal Sea?

As of now, no. In the near future I’d like to write the stories of the other champions. Brendan and Dylan need short stories that spotlight their adventures.

9) What will your next book venture be? (Hint please)

Right now I’m working on a contemporary romance about a college drop-out and a celebrity chef set in Boston. It’s called Luck on the Line and it’ll be published by Diversion Books on 11/10/14.

As for my YA, I’m working on a book which is totally top secret.

10) Will you ever write a story about the other creatures in your Vicious Deep Trilogy?

Yes. Tristan’s school, Thorne Hill High, is full of magical kids. Some of them don’t even know it yet.

Fallon's Review:

I recieved an e-arc from netgalley for this blog tour courtesy of Sourcebook's. Thank you! Zoraida was so awesome and joined us for our Mermaid Month and I am so happy I got to read this back in May and post a teaser.

Tristan is torn apart since Nieve took the girl he loves. He starts to have visions of her being captured. Kurt and Gwen have betrayed him and Tristan does not know who he can depend on. Despite everything that has happened to Tristan he still displays a genuinely good heart. He never asked for any of this but still feels it is his duty to protect the ones he loves.

Zoraida yet again took us to a place that is beyond words. The creatures and world that comes from her imagination is breath taking. The Sleeping Giants were amazing and should have there own book. I love Greek Mythologies and Zoraida did not disappoint with this third book. I know who gets the Trident and I am not telling, because you need to read this incredible book to find out. I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars this is a must read.
