Author Description:

Set in a terrifyingly brutal Rome-like world, An Ember in the Ashes is an epic fantasy debut about an orphan fighting for her family and a soldier fighting for his freedom. It’s a story that’s literally burning to be told.

LAIA is a Scholar living under the iron-fisted rule of the Martial Empire. When her brother is arrested for treason, Laia goes undercover as a slave at the empire’s greatest military academy in exchange for assistance from rebel Scholars who claim that they will help to save her brother from execution.

ELIAS is the academy’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias is considering deserting the military, but before he can, he’s ordered to participate in a ruthless contest to choose the next Martial emperor.

When Laia and Elias’s paths cross at the academy, they find that their destinies are more intertwined than either could have imagined and that their choices will change the future of the empire itself.

Fallon's Review:

Elias is a bastard child who his mom gave up at birth to live in a village. Till one day he is discovered and brought back to the palace to become part of the army. His grandfather embraces him while his mother shuns his very existence. Elias is in training to become a mask in the army. Although Elias can not stand the cause he has to fight for.

Laia is a girl who lives in a village and is a scholar. Her parents were murdered by The Masks. The most deadly assassins in the Empires Army. Laia is living with her brother and grandparents and her brother brings trouble to the house. The army is at their doorstep and her grandparents are murdered and her brother tells her to run and becomes captured. On the run Laia seeks help to free her brother.

An Ember in the Ashes had such incredible world building and the detail of characters made me love each one. Every character had such depth. Elias the boy who is fighting for a cause and family he was raised to fear and hate. To his mother who is mean to the core but you know from the detail of situations there is so much more to her story and why she is that way. We get to watch Laia grow as a character and experience all her faults and attributes. Helene was this bright loyal and fierce friend. I thought I would know who I would love but I feel for each character and liked all the attributes Sabaa gave them. That is also the thing I also loved about her writing.

Honestly this is a great read and had a much higher Fantasy element then I thought it would. Which I loved. I can not wait for book 2. I was a little torn because I do adore all the characters so I do not know what I want to happen in the second book but I am excited for the journey it will take me on. I am giving An Ember in the Ashes 4 Out of 5 Stars.
