When Kate Thompson’s father is killed by the notorious Rose Riders for a mysterious journal that reveals the secret location of a gold mine, the eighteen-year-old disguises herself as a boy and takes to the gritty plains looking for answers and justice. What she finds are devious strangers, dust storms, and a pair of brothers who refuse to quit riding in her shadow. But as Kate gets closer to the secrets about her family, she gets closer to the truth about herself and must decide if there's room for love in a heart so full of hate.
In the spirit of True Grit, the cutthroat days of the Wild West come to life for a new generation.
Thank you so much HMH for sending me an ARC for review. This in no way affected my opinion in my review.
From the moment I heard there was going to be a western YA I know I had to read it and add the fact it was Erin Bowman writing it and I knew I wanted it ASAP.
This story definitely has the touch of the feel of True Grit with the girl seeking Vengeance for her father. This book is a firecracker all on it own merit though. Also the characters are a completely different age range which I felt was more plausible and relatable than True Grit. Do not get me wrong I love Western cinema I just think Erin Bowman wrote a very emotional and raw depiction that worked on a whole new level.
Kate finds her Father hung and her house burnt to the ground. She goes to town seeking information and Vengeance for her Father's murder. She soon discovers it was the Rose Riders posse was responsible and she is determined to track them down and make them pay. This chick is tough as nails and a great shot. She cuts her hair off knowing a women is more vulnerable than a man. She binds her breasts and follows her dads instructions to find Abe a friend of her Pa's.
Kate finds the ranch where Abe is suppose to live but he passed away a couple years ago. What she does come across is to boys who set off to protect her on her travels. Both boys do not know she is a girl. This creates some awkward moments for Kate.
Vengeance Road was such a fast fun read with lots of action and a true Western feel. This road of Vengeance will sweep you up and then twist you all around. Erin Bowman created shocking moments you will not see coming. This was an emotional rollercoaster and I loved every minute of it.
Find out if Kate will get her Vengeance or if she will choose another path. This is a must read and something that we needed in YA. Thank you HMH for this amazingly diverse book that adds to a genre and is a true trailblazer.
Now for the Amazing Trailer!
