Sixteen-year-old Lyric Walker’s life is forever changed when she witnesses the arrival of 30,000 Alpha, a five-nation race of ocean-dwelling warriors, on her beach in Coney Island. The world’s initial wonder and awe over the Alpha quickly turns ugly and paranoid and violent, and Lyric’s small town transforms into a military zone with humans on one side and Alpha on the other. When Lyric is recruited to help the crown prince, a boy named Fathom, assimilate, she begins to fall for him. But their love is a dangerous one, and there are forces on both sides working to keep them apart. Only, what if the Alpha are not actually the enemy? What if they are in fact humanity’s only hope of survival? Because the real enemy is coming. And it’s more terrifying than anything the world has ever seen.

Action, suspense, and romance whirlpool dangerously in this cinematic saga, a blend of District 9 and The Outsiders.

The cover of Undertow had always appealed to me but I was not completely sure what the book was going to be about other then creatures from the ocean. Well this book blew all my expectations out of the water and shattered them. If you know me you know I love mermaids and mythological books. I even named my daughter Atlantis. So I fell hard for this book. It was original, fast paced and full of action. Michael Buckley's imagination in the amount and variety of creatures was gross and completely awesome all at the same time.

This story starts out with Lyric a girl being forced to integrate and attend school with the creatures from the beach. Their school is to be the first example of simulating the creatures into our human lives. However, most do not want to have them live among the humans and are not going to let this go quietly. Lyric is forced to spend time with Fathom the prince and show they can form friendships and teach them to be more human. With so much anger and hate can they form a mutual understanding and learn to respect their differences?

I adored the world building and description through out this story and never did it feel heavy or as if it weighed it down. There were moments I laughed and moments I cried. I look forward to reading so much more from Michael Buckley in the future. This is one of my top 10 favorite reads of 2015 and not a book to be missed. You will be gripping the page with anticipation right up till the end and be left wanting more.

Goodreads Synopsis:

In the first book of Michael Buckley’s Undertow trilogy, the Alpha arrived and the world was never the same. At the start of the second book, most of south Brooklyn is in ruins and the nation is terrified. Nearly everyone that Lyric Walker loves is either missing or presumed dead, including the mesmerizing prince Fathom. It’s up to Lyric to unite the Alpha before the second wave of a cataclysmic invasion wipes out mankind for good. The Undertow trilogy is an unforgettable reading experience that author E. Lockhart calls, "Allegorical and romantic, the book nevertheless reads like an action movie with especially awesome CGI."

Thank you so much HMH sending me an ARC of Raging Sea for review. This in no way affected my opinion.

Michael has done it again with Raging Sea. This book was not as fast paced as Undertow but was appealing in other areas. It had 3 kick butt chicks traveling together trying to find the people they love and rescue them from a fate worse then death. They find themselves in some very sticky situations running from the law. All Coasters are considered scum and are unwanted inland. So Lyric has to try to stay out of trouble and avoid capture if she hopes to rescue her parents and people from the compound they are being held at.

This book is full of a couple twist and turns. Yet again we get a action pact adventure with battles of epic proportions. Lyric is such an amazing character who takes on all these obstacles. Her best friend is her real rock in this series and calls her out on all her crap and I think that makes both characters even more endearing. Will they make it in time to rescue the people they love and who is still among the survivors? You will be flying through the pages to find out.

I am so excited for the next book in this series. Michael Buckley does a sea creature book full of non-stop action like no one else. I am such a fan. This is a must read and a book that will stay on my shelf till the pages wither away. A definite 5 out of 5 stars.
