And Lada Dragwlya likes it that way. Ever since she and her gentle younger brother, Radu, were wrenched from their homeland of Wallachia and abandoned by their father to be raised in the Ottoman courts, Lada has known that being ruthless is the key to survival. She and Radu are doomed to act as pawns in a vicious game, an unseen sword hovering over their every move. For the lineage that makes them special also makes them targets.

Lada despises the Ottomans and bides her time, planning her vengeance for the day when she can return to Wallachia and claim her birthright. Radu longs only for a place where he feels safe. And when they meet Mehmed, the defiant and lonely son of the sultan, who’s expected to rule a nation, Radu feels that he’s made a true friend—and Lada wonders if she’s finally found someone worthy of her passion.

But Mehmed is heir to the very empire that Lada has sworn to fight against—and that Radu now considers home. Together, Lada, Radu, and Mehmed form a toxic triangle that strains the bonds of love and loyalty to the breaking point.

From New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White comes the first book in a dark, sweeping new series in which heads will roll, bodies will be impaled . . . and hearts will be broken.

Thank you Random House Kids for sending me a copy of And I Darken for review. This in no way affected my opinion.

Kiersten White's world building is phenomenal. I mean this story starts from the day Lada is born and works it's way through her childhood. We experience all the moments that make this girl the fierce warrior she is. What makes this an even more amazing contrast in her character is witnessing the birth of her younger brother who is the polar opposite. Where she is hard and tough Radu is soft and weak.

One of my favorite moments is reading about this little spitfire toddler being introduced to her baby brother and she is disgusted by his crying. "The baby started to cry, a weak, garbled sound that worried the nurse. Lada's scowl deepened. She slapped a dimpled hand over his mouth. The nurse pulled him away quickly, and Lada looked up, face contorted in rage. ""Mine!"" She shouted." This girl is so fierce and that is the foundation of her and Radu's relationship. They are never really friends. But he is hers and she will always protect him from others, other then her own wrath.

Lada earns the favor of her father who never thought his seed would be weak enough to produce a girl. She becomes tougher then all the boys. She feels her homeland in her roots and knows she is meant to rule. No man will own her and take away her free will.

Lada's father finds himself at war and has to give Lada and Radu to the Sultan as collateral of his continued allegiance. Lada and Radu are taught and housed but become beaten and abused to conform to the Sultan's religious beliefs. Lada and Radu however soon form a friendship with the Sultan's son. Lada swore no man would ever have her but it is a hard balance when this girl who is unlike any other draws the attention of the men around her.

I tore through the pages of And I Darken from start to finish. I am so in love with Lada's character. This is seriously a must read. I almost never read Historical Fiction but knew I had to read this book and am so glad I did. The only reason I gave it 4.5 stars is because during some of Radu's POV's the pacing was a little slower but that did not hinder the story and his POV was necessary and captivating.

About the Author:
The New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy (Paranormalcy,Supernaturally, and Endlessly) is available now. Mind Games and its sequel Perfect Lies are also out, staring at you from a bookshelf. Intensely. An Egyptian mythology-based standalone, The Chaos of Stars, will keep you company on cold, dark nights. And Illusions of Fate, a dreamy historical fantasy, wants to be your new boyfriend. It's a really good kisser.

Coming June 28th is And I Darken, an epic historical based on a gender-swapped Vlad the Impaler. It's filled with love daggers, which are like love triangles only much sharper and way more likely to kill you.
